Harmful Algal Blooms in New England

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are becoming more common in lakes and ponds throughout New England. In Massachusetts and Connecticut, excess nutrients, warm temperatures, and stagnant water can create ideal conditions for rapid algae growth that impacts water quality, aquatic ecosystems, and recreational use.

While not all algae blooms are harmful, certain types of cyanobacteria, often called blue-green algae, can produce toxins that may pose risks to people, pets, fish, and wildlife.

What Causes Harmful Algal Blooms?

Excess nutrients are the primary cause of harmful algal blooms. Nitrogen and phosphorus enter lakes and ponds through:

  • Fertilizer runoff

  • Stormwater runoff

  • Pet waste

  • Waterfowl activity

  • Decaying vegetation

  • Sediment nutrient release

When combined with warm temperatures and abundant sunlight, these nutrients fuel excessive algae growth.

Risks of HABs

Harmful algal blooms can reduce water clarity, create unpleasant odors, and limit recreational activities such as swimming, fishing, and boating.

As blooms die and decompose, they consume oxygen in the water, which can stress fish and other aquatic life. Some cyanobacteria may also produce toxins that can affect people and animals that come into contact with contaminated water.

Preventing Harmful Algal Blooms

The most effective way to prevent HABs is through proactive lake and pond management. Key strategies include:

Aeration systems can improve water circulation and dissolved oxygen levels, helping support a healthier aquatic ecosystem.

Protecting New England Lakes and Ponds

Harmful algal blooms are often a sign of underlying water quality issues. By reducing nutrient inputs and implementing preventative management practices, property owners can improve water quality and reduce the risk of recurring blooms.

At Water & Wetland, we provide lake management, pond management, pond aeration, algae control, and water quality services throughout Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New England. Our customized solutions help property owners maintain healthier, more sustainable waterbodies year-round.
